This preserve can be a bit of a challenge to find. Head out on Rte. 13 south from Ithaca. When the highway divides, bear right to stay on Rte. 13. Go about 1.6 miles and look left to find a clump of four or five large Norway spruces across the road, approximately across from Stella’s Barn Restaurant and 1338 Elmira Road. Park on the east side of the road near the Norway spruces atop an old barn foundation. A blazed trail leads from the parking area downhill along the hedgerow through open fields and eventually into the woods. There should be a striking difference in tree size and form, and species composition when you enter the old-growth forest.
